Dr. Kathryn C ThorntonDr. Thornton teaches in the Department of Science, Technology and Society and in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She also manages the Graduate Studies Office as Associate Dean for Graduate Programs. Selected as an astronaut in 1984, Thornton is a veteran of four Space Shuttle flights between 1989 and 1995, including the maiden flight of Endeavour in 1992 and the first Hubble Space Telescope Service Mission in 1993. She was Payload Commander in 1995 on the second U.S. Microgravity Laboratory mission. She has logged over 975 hours in space, including more than 21 hours of extravehicular activity.

Joseph Allen Brown, Jr. passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2011 after a courageous, nine-year-long battle with cancer. He died peacefully at home. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Deb, son Stuart, step-daughter Jennifer, mother Margaret, brother David, sister Jane Wesley, father-in-law Gerald Lee, sister-in-law Pamela Lee Baker(husband Thomas O.), brother-in-law Wayne Lee(wife Marsha), nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Joe A. Brown.

A Hope Hull man was killed in a single-vehicle crash near Union Springs over the weekend.

About 8:10 p.m. Saturday, Alabama state troopers responded to the accident on U.S. 82 at mile marker 182, about 16 miles west of Union Springs.
