RANT: For the slow growth in gross domestic product in Alabama in 2012, and for the underlying economic issues indicated by it. GDP in our state grew by 1.2 percent last year, slightly less than half the national rate of 2.5 percent. Among Southern states, Alabama significantly trailed Florida (2.4 percent), South Carolina (2.7 percent), North Carolina (2.7 percent) and Tennessee (3.3 percent). It's always good to be improving, of course, but clearly plenty of challenges remain for our state's economy.
