They may not have huge inventories or lots of sales clerks, but merchants in the Mulberry District showed Saturday that a little TLC will go a long way in landing a sale.

Halos didn't hurt, either, as Wendy Guglielmino and Karen Hoffman found out at In The Mood, a curio shop with a wide variety of gift ideas for the holidays.

"We don't want what everybody else wants, like at the mall," said Guglielmino.

"This is a unique shopping area and we wanted to sample some of the special flavor of Montgomery."

Their husbands had been assigned to Pentagon duty just outside of Washington, but when they arrived in Montgomery, they and their wives began to look for different things to do, especially when they began to explore "quaint" parts of town.

"We are enjoying the lovely Southern weather and charm," said Hoffman. "As soon as we went in, they offered us snacks and then the halos when we left."

After Guglielmino and Hoffman finished examining items at In The Mood, they began to leave when they were presented with white halos. They proudly wore them -- along with big smiles -- as they walked down Mulberry Street and headed back to their vehicles.

The halos were presented to customers by shop owner Linda Jones and her clerks. Jones has owned the shop for the past decade and usually comes up with something unique for customers.

Across the street at Painted Pink, owner Pat McDonald and clerk Lindsay Davis were kept busy showing customers upscale dresses, costume jewelry and other items. Then, they topped it off with cookies.

"The personal attention we provide is a big reason why we've done so well here on Mulberry Street for so long," said McDonald. "When it comes to clothing, we offer exclusive lines that other stores in the city don't have."

The Mulberry District, as it has been known for years, extends for several streets and includes about 150 businesses ranging from lawyers to fast food restaurants.

The annual open house, which continues today, is held each year on the second weekend of November. It follows other events that include a Spring Fling, May Fest and Pumpkin Fest.
