Lions' last region game Thursday at Cramton

Back in the 1960s, Jefferson Davis High School was built in Montgomery, siphoning off some football talent from Sidney Lanier and Robert E. Lee, which at the time were among the top high school football teams in the state.

When Jeff Davis opened its doors in 1968, Lanier was starting its third campaign in a row for the state championship. Jeff Davis started out with a bang, winning its first three games under former Lanier assistant Billy Livings. Then Jeff Davis came to Prattville and lost 13-0.

Coached by Horace Powell back then, the Prattville Lions have the distinction of being the first team to ever beat Jeff Davis. Since 1968, Prattville and Jeff Davis have met 27 times. The Lions have won 17 games and the Volunteers 10.

When the Lions travel to Cramton Bowl Thursday, they will face a Jeff Davis team that is having an off year. Under second-year coach Travis Pearson, Jeff Davis is 2-5 prior to Friday's game with Wetumpka. Results were not available at press time.

In their last two games, Jeff Davis only lost by three points -- 10-7 to Stanhope Elmore and 13-10 to Robert E. Lee. Prior to Friday, the Volunteers were 2-3 in Prattville's region, while Prattville was 3-2.

Friday, the Volunteers played region leader and undefeated Wetumpka. Friday, the 5-2 Lions played the 1-6 Benjamin Russell Wildcats.

A victory over the Wildcats, another region opponent, should keep Prattville in third place in the region, behind Wetumpka and Stanhope, and just above Carver.

The top four in the region advance to the playoffs. Game time at Cramton Bowl is 7 p.m.

The Jeff Davis game is the last region game for Prattville. Prattville will close out its regular season Oct. 29 with a trip to Miami, Fla., to play Central Miami High School.
